If your dog's diet is lacking in moisture and fiber they will more than likely develop constipation at some point. Discover simple ways to avoid this common problem.
How Do I Know If My Dog is Constipated?
24 Counter Stools
--The most obvious method is to see if the stools are hard
--Does your dog have prolonged straining?
--Make sure your dog is not straining from trying to urinate as this could be a serious medical symptom.
--How long has the straining lasted? If more than two days he is probably constipated; try an over-the-counter or home remedy or take him to a vet especially if there is blood or pain involved.
Causes of Constipation
--Has your dog recently had surgery? Medications and anesthesia can cause constipation.
--A blockage can occur if your dog has eaten items in the home or around the yard like rocks, plants, fabric from furniture or toys.
--Hair can create hairballs (not just for kitties) which cannot be digested and will cause constipation.
--Rarer but more serious constipation symptoms could be from a tumor or other diseases or health concerns.
How to Treat Dog Constipation
Do not try to treat your dog's constipation if you have noticed any blood, mucous or excessive pain as this could mean a much more serious condition.
--The healthiest, perhaps the easiest and most cost effective is to increase the fiber in your dog's diet. Many people use cooked fresh pumpkin or plain pure canned pumpkin very high in moisture and fiber; just add a little in his food. Most dogs will eat pumpkin especially in a dog Popsicle or treat. Many recipes are available online. Just type in pumpkin treats for dogs.
--Natural supplements which contain psyllium husk, oat straw, aloe ferox and/or probiotics can help with regular bowel movements and digestive health.
--Many people use mineral oil for their dog as a lubricant for constipation. From a health standpoint I would avoid mineral oil as it is a by-product of distilling gasoline from crude oil. It will absorb any fat-soluble vitamins like A, D E and K and it has been found to decrease lung function, which is why you will not see it in any product taken orally. If you decide to use it, you can add a little to your dogs' food or by spoon if he will eat it. Use care if administering the mineral oil by syringe as this can sometimes unintentionally get into his wind pipe instead of the esophagus resulting in aspiration pneumonia. Use mineral oil only while your dog is constipated and not as a daily regime. The dose varies by the dog's size. Use ¼ to ½ teaspoon for small dogs less than 10 lbs, 1 tsp for dogs with a weight of 25 to 50 lbs.
--Pet stores carry stool softeners or laxatives mostly containing mineral oil.
--Don't forget exercise and plenty of fresh water.
Try the diet first and if your dog is still having a constipation problem you will need to seek the advice of a veterinarian.
